SUMMARY:Information Session: Space Sustainability Continuing Education Course – Second Edition 2025
DESCRIPTION:How can we make space missions more sustainable? Join us on Monday\, January 27\, from 13:00 to 14:00 (CET) for an engaging online info session to explore what space sustainability really means and how it impacts the aerospace industry. \n REGISTER \nIn recent years\, the exponential growth of spatial activities\, driven in part by the expanding commercial use of space\, has yielded promising business opportunities.However\, this expansion has also left behind a significant challenge – an ever-increasing population of space debris\, with over 28\,000 objects currently observable in Earth’s orbit. How can we secure the long-term usability of space and design space businesses and missions with a focus on sustainability? \nSpace Sustainability is a new EPFL short program designed to: \nUnderstand what space sustainability means (from historical\, geopolitical\,economic\, societal\, and environmental perspectives) and how to measure it \nExplore tools and methodologies for developing more sustainable space missions (ESA’s MASTER and DRAMA suite\, Space Sustainability Rating\, Life Cycle Assessment & Environmental Impact Assessment\, etc.) \nInteract with the most recent research developments and explore the potential advantages of incorporating Environmental Social Governance (ESG) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategies within the space sector \nThis course is organized by EPFL Space Center (eSpace)\, EPFL (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne) in collaboration with International Space University (ISU)\, IMS Space Consultancy and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The program is designed for individuals engaged in space-related roles (engineers\, scientists\, non-technical managers\, policy practitioners\, etc.) and who share a common focus on ensuring the long-term sustainability and safety of the space environment. \nThis course will take place March 24-27\, 2025 \n Course information

SUMMARY:Non-Volatile Photonics for Zero-Energy Programmable Optical Networks
DESCRIPTION:Programmable Photonic Integrated Circuits provide mutability and versatility to optical networks. The ability to implement non-volatile mechanisms onto a standard platform is instrumental in providing zero-energy consumption during the exploitation of a programmed configuration. In this talk\, we will see the advancements and challenges of two of the most advanced strategies of endowing the highly standardized silicon photonic platform with non-volatility: Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) and Phase Change Materials (PCM). We will see the work performed at EPFL in order to mature these two technologies with a focus on scalable fabrication. \nHernán Furci is a scientist in Photonics and Nanotechnologies at EPFL. With early career background in Nuclear Engineering and Heat Transfer\, he completed a PhD in Low Temperature Applied Physics at the University of Paris-Saclay in 2015. Subsequently\, he joined CERN\, where he developed micro-engineered superconducting thin film thermometry for sub-2K superfluid helium systems. His passion for microfabrication led him to joining Prof. Quack’s Photonics Group at EPFL in 2019. Since then\, he has conducted research and development in nanotechnology\, both in the fields of superconducting thin film sensors (SNF Ambizione grant) and integrated photonics (ESA-funded projects). The latter research targets the seamless integration with high-volume-compatible fabrication techniques of non-volatile mechanisms onto standard photonic platforms\, aiming at offering a landscape of ultra-low power programmable photonics.

SUMMARY:Towards a Sustainable Space: Addressing the Challenges of the Final Frontier
DESCRIPTION:View Slides\n \n \nSustainability Series with Christophe Bonnal\, Space Debris and Launcher Expert\, MaiaSpace \nSummary of his talk: “Anything that goes up will eventually come down… In the case of launchers and satellites in Low Earth Orbit\, this means returning to Earth through an atmospheric reentry at very high velocity. This generates high heat fluxes\, partially ‘melting’ the objects. Typically\, about 20% survive reentry and pose a risk to people on the ground; however\, the remaining 80% will stay in the upper atmosphere for some time\, leading to unwanted disruptions to the ozone layer and contributing to greenhouse gas effects. How can we solve this dilemma-putting people at risk or damaging the atmosphere?” \nProgramme \n06:00pm: Doors open \n06:30pm: Welcome address by Emmanuelle David\, Executive Director\, EPFL Space Center \n06:40pm: Presentation by Christophe Bonnal \n07:10pm: Round table moderated by the Science Journalist Olivier Dessibourg with: \n\nChristophe Bonnal\nDr Susmita Mohanty\nSpaceship Designer\, Serial Space Entrepreneur and Climate Action Advocate\nProf. Athanasios Nenes\nFull Professor\, Laboratory of Atmospheric Processes and their Impacts\, EPFL\nLiesbeth Casier\nLead\, Public Procurement and Sustainable Infrastructure and Coordinator of the NBI Global Resource Centre at the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD).\n\n07:40pm: Q&A moderated by Olivier Dessibourg \n8:00pm: Aperitif networking \n \n Register here (free)

SUMMARY:EPFL Space Center - Seminar series: Surviving on Mars
DESCRIPTION:EPFL Space Center Seminar series\nSURVIVING ON MARS\nFuture human missions to the Moon or Mars require sustainable life support systems that can provide oxygen\, water\, and food with minimal reliance on Earth. \nUnlike the ISS\, these missions will face longer durations and greater distances\, demanding far more autonomous systems. Integrating biological components\, especially food-producing systems\, is a key challenge and opportunity. Microalgae are promising candidates due to their high photosynthetic efficiency\, nutritional value\, and contribution to oxygen and water recycling. Current research explores whether ISS technologies can be adapted for deep-space missions and what innovations are needed. A central question remains whether astronauts will rely on stored food or grow their own\, maybe with algae as part of the menu? \nProf. Gisela Detrell‘s field of research is the development of technologies to enable human spaceflight\, with special focus on Life Support Systems Technologies (specially on the use of microalgae photobioreactors for oxygen and food production for long duration missions)\, human spaceflight simulation (for example with conceptual design studies of future human spaceflight missions to the Moon or Mars) and human spaceflight performance (for example with the development of Virtual Reality tools\, to develop and improve training strategies). \nProf. Detrell studied Aerospace Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) and completed her doctorate in Life Support Systems reliability analysis for long duration space missions at the University of Stuttgart (Germany) and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in 2015. She continued her research at the Institute of Space Systems in Stuttgart\, leading the research group since 2018. In 2023 Prof. Detrell was appointed to the professorship for Human Spaceflight Technology at TUM.

SUMMARY:EPFL Space Center – Seminar series: Exploring the Uncommon for the Common Good – Space Biology\, Medicine and Technology
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, 31 March 2026\n13:00-14:15\nEPFL Campus\, room BC 420\nOnline: zoom link\n\nA presentation by the Center for Space and Aviation Switzerland and Liechtenstein (CSA)\nThe Center for Space and Aviation Switzerland and Liechtenstein (CSA) is an alliance born in 2024 from 11 large space and aviation institutions across two countries\, including a Civil Research Flight Facility with aircraft handling and operations. Connected to the Switzerland Innovation Park Zurich in Dübendorf\, it forms an end-to-end ecosystem for space research and technology operations. \n  \nOverview of the Presentation\nOliver Ullrich will introduce the CSA and its institutional foundations. \nMarcel Egli will cover the major physiological changes in the human body under microgravity\, highlight related research conducted at partner institutions\, and introduce the newly established ESA ground-based facility SHARF\, dedicated to space farming research. He will also describe the ESA User Support and Operations Centre BIOTESC and its role in enabling scientific activities aboard the International Space Station. \nCora Thiel will present how human cells can sense and adapt to changes in gravity within seconds\, pointing to a possible “genomic code of gravity.” She will also highlight her research on patient-derived organoids in microgravity\, which enabled the first scalable production process for functional human tissues in space – with strong potential for translational and personalized medicine. \nLorenz Herrmann will give an overview of space-related research activities at Empa\, closing with an outlook on future collaboration opportunities based on Empa’s core competences. \n  \nAbout the Presenters\nProf. Dr. Marcel Egli serves as Head of the Institute of Medical Engineering at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts and of the National Center for Biomedical Research in Space at the University of Zurich. He directs ESA’s User Support and Operations Centre BIOTESC and leads the ESA ground-based facility SHARF\, an analogue platform dedicated to research in space farming and bioregenerative life-support systems. His scientific work focuses on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of mechanosensation under microgravity conditions\, employing platforms including parabolic flight campaigns\, sounding rockets\, and the International Space Station. \nDr. Cora Thiel is Vice Director at the University of Zurich’s Institute of Aerospace Medicine and Director of International Relations at the CSA. Her expertise spans cell and molecular biology\, neuroscience\, immunology\, and gravitational biology.
