The EPFL Space Centre (eSpace) is dedicated to promoting excellence in space research, education and innovation. Our dynamic team boasts a profound technical expertise with a wide range of industry and academic experience, and benefits from close collaborations with research laboratories and institutes at EPFL. The internal skill set includes system engineering, mission design, interdisciplinary project management, scenario planning, technology roadmapping, attitude and orbit control systems (AOCS), and relative navigation. We can also welcome PhD students within our team (check the PhD Guide at EPFL).

Occasional job opportunities will be published below, however we are always interested in hearing from talented individuals who could bring additional skills and knowledge to our team. While all aspects of space research will be considered, our current focus is on three main areas: removal of space debris, sustainable space logistics, and relative navigation.

EPFLeaders4impact - Call for postdoctoral fellowship applications

EPFLeaders4impact is a new postdoctoral fellowship programme funding talented researchers who have the ambition to provide innovative solutions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The programme will fund between 40 and 120 fellowships of a duration of 12, 18, 24, or 36 months. Granted applicants will carry out their project at EPFL and benefit from a multifaceted training programme, including a collaboration with the non-academic sector. During the programme, EPFLeaders4impact fellows will be able to take steps towards starting a company based on their own research or to have their proposed innovative solution implemented through a technology transfer to an existing company/organisation.

Available funding

EPFLeaders4impact has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement N° 101034260. The EPFLeaders4impact fellowship consists of a monthly contribution to the salary of the postdoctoral researcher of EUR 2’740 for a duration of 12, 18, 24, or 36 months. The EPFL academic supervisor must complement the EU contribution to the salary of the EPFLeaders4impact fellow (co-funding cannot come from funding schemes requiring time-keeping such as H2020 / Horizon Europe or Innosuisse) and pay for the associated costs (research costs, equipment, travel expenses, conferences, open access publications, etc.).

EPFLeaders4impact is open to applicants of any nationality provided they fulfil the following eligibility criteria:

  • Applicants must hold a doctoral degree or have at least 4 years of full-time equivalent research experience by at the latest the date of recruitment.
  • Applicants must fulfil the MSCA transnational mobility rules and must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Switzerland for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the call deadline.

How to apply

Please apply via the online submission portal before 31 January 2022 (17:00 CEST).

Decisions will be announced in early June 2022, and granted applicants will have to start their project within four months of the notice of the award, i.e., on 1 October 2022 at the latest.
