SUMMARY:9th Sustainable Space Hub Coffee
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, 3 June 2026\n12:30-14:00\nEPFL Campus\, PPB 019\n  \nJoin us for the 9th edition of the Sustainable Space Hub (SSH) Coffee & cookies\, an opportunity to connect with the community and explore the latest developments in space sustainability. \nStephan Hellmich will present the new SSA (Space Situational Awareness) activities: the NASO (Extracting Space Object Observations from large Astronomical Data Archives) and TESSA (Technologies to Enhance Space Situational Awareness) projects. \nIn collaboration with the University of Bern\, the TESSA project continues to advance capabilities in satellite tracking and space object monitoring. Work in 2026 pursues two parallel research tracks: refining 6D pose estimation techniques for the precise determination of object position and orientation in space\, and developing adaptive optics solutions for the Zimmerwald Observatory\, including the associated algorithms for correcting atmospheric distortion. Together\, these efforts contribute to the broader challenge of space situational awareness and safe orbital\noperations.\nDuring the event\, the space semester projects for the fall semester will also be announced. \n  \nProvisional schedule \n12:30 – Welcome\, coffee\, cookies & networking\n13:00 – Stephan Hellmich will present the new SSA activities: the NASO and TESSA projects.\n13:10 – Presentation of the space semester projects for the fall semester.\n13:45 – Q&A and open discussion\nWe look forward to welcoming you for an engaging discussion and informal networking around the latest advances in sustainable space activities. \n  \nMore information \nSemester projects: https://espace.epfl.ch/education/student-projects/\nPresearch at EPFL Space Center: https://espace.epfl.ch/research/

SUMMARY:8th Sustainable Space Hub Coffee
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, 12 March 2026\n12:30-14:00\nEPFL Campus\, PPB 019\n  \nJoin us for the 8th edition of the Sustainable Space Hub (SSH) Coffee\, an opportunity to connect with the community and explore the latest developments in space sustainability. \nWe are delighted to welcome Prof. Véronique Michaud\, who will present the SLICE doctoral network. The hiring process for the PhDs in SLICE is currently open. SLICE investigates the environmental and climate impacts of space launch systems\, advancing research on emissions\, atmospheric interactions\, and sustainable design. The project provides essential insights to support European policymaking and trains a new generation of researchers committed to shaping a more sustainable future for space transportation.\nThe call for PhD positions within SLICE is currently open!\nDuring the event\, we will also announce this semester’s ClearSpace Prize winner. The prize will be awarded by Jacques Viertl\, Managing Director of ClearSpace.\nThe ClearSpace Prize recognizes an EPFL student whose semester project or Master’s thesis demonstrates excellence and makes a significant scientific or technical contribution to the field of space sustainability.\n  \nAgenda \n12:30 – Welcome\, coffee\, cookies & networking\n13:00 – ClearSpace Prize announcement\n13:10 – SLICE presentation by Prof. Véronique Michaud\n13:45 – Q&A and open discussion\nWe look forward to welcoming you for an engaging discussion and informal networking around the latest advances in sustainable space activities. \n  \nMore information: \nSLICE Doctoral network: https://slice-dn.eu/\nClearSpace Prize: https://espace.epfl.ch/education/student-projects/clearspace-prize/

SUMMARY:Sustainable Space Hub Coffee
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the next Sustainable Space Hub coffee on November 6th\, 13h00 in PPB 0 19 (EPFL Campus). \nSeptember and October have been intense with several events and conferences that included the topic of space sustainability.\nThe 3rd Workshop on “Life Cycle Assessment of Space Transportation Systems” took place in Stuttgart. 35 experts from politics\, space agencies\, industry and research came together to exchange about the current status and possible approaches to assess the environmental impact of rockets.\nLater\, the CleanSpace Days 2024 at ESTEC\, with technical sessions on LCA/ecodesign\, zero debris\, and in-orbit servicing (IOS) gathered European experts from academia\, agencies\, and industries\, spearheading the research and implementation of these topics. Finally\, the largest annual space-related event\, the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) was hosted in Milano\, with its main focus on “responsible space for sustainability”. Many sessions at IAC grouped presentations about space sustainability over a broad range of research projects and technologies from all over the world.\nThe EPFL Space Center staffs that attended one or more of these conferences will take the opportunity of the 4th sustainable space hub coffee to compile lessons learnt and a summary of international research to share with the EPFL community.\nMore info on the Sustainable Space Hub.

SUMMARY:Sustainable Space Hub Coffee
DESCRIPTION:After a successful first event in March\, we are organising a second sustainable space hub coffee! \nWe will have the opportunity to hear a summary of the PhD that Alexandre Looten recently obtained at LPAC\, on the atmospheric re-entry of composite materials and design for demise of spacecrafts. D4D brings an interesting trade-off to the table: while it’s seen as a solution for reducing the risks of uncontrolled re-entry (thus reducing space debris and the risk of casualties on the ground)\, it generates high altitude emissions (70-100km) that could have unpredictable atmospheric impacts. \nParticipants are then invited to take part in an open discussion over coffee and cookies. \nIn order to unite EPFL’s forces in the domain of sustainability in space\, eSpace has launched the Sustainable Space Hub (SSH). The goal of the Hub is to coherently manage and foster the growth of topics such as space debris risks\, high altitude atmospheric impacts\, and other environmental impacts on Earth. 5 institutes within EPFL are currently involved in research and development projects in the field of space sustainability. The hub is connecting these individual projects in a workflow that rests on three intertwined pillars: measure\, understand\, and act for space sustainability. \nMore info on the Sustainable Space Hub.
