Thank you for your presence!

On November 6, engineers @mathieu_udriot and Marnix Verkammen hosted the 4th Sustainable Space Hub coffee at @epflcampus.

September and October have been intense with several events and conferences that included the topic of space sustainability:

- The 3rd Workshop on “Life Cycle Assessment of Space Transportation Systems” in Stuttgart
- The Clean Space Days 2024 at ESTEC in the Netherlands
- The International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Milano

The EPFL Space Center staffs that attended one or more of these conferences took the opportunity to compile lessons learnt and a summary of international research to share with the EPFL community.

Join us for an engaging 3-day event where experts from leading Swiss research institutions and industries will explore critical topics in space sustainability.

🌌 Highlights from Clean Space Days! 🌍

Last week, the eSpace team engaged in crucial discussions on space sustainability at the largest Clean Space Days yet, with over 30 countries and 300 attendees. The urgency for sustainable practices in our industry has never been clearer!

Key Moments:

🔹 Tuesday:
A powerful introduction by the Clean Space Office emphasized the importance of ecodesign, space debris mitigation, and in-orbit servicing.

🔹 Wednesday:
@mathieu_udriot presented updates on the Assessment and Comparison Tool (ACT), sparking insightful discussions. #REACTproject
Jonathan Wei @john_w79 shared his MSc thesis on collision avoidance, supervised by Emmanuelle David @numhero, showcasing innovative policy frameworks.
@hannah_besser and @marnix_verkammen engaged attendees with their research during the poster sessions. Hannah presented her Master thesis thesis on optimizing GEO satellite on-orbit refuelling for sustainabile space logistics. Marnix presented the EPFL Handbook on sustainable practices for space missions design.

🔹 Thursday:
Mathieu Udriot discussed the use of ACT for ecodesign in future European launchers, underlining its significance in early design stages. #VOLAREproject @arianegroup

🔹 Friday:
EPFL contributed to the Zero Debris Technical Booklet, translating sustainability goals into actionable developments.

🚀 The EPFL Rocket Team is hard at work on their new test facility, designed to test bi-liquid cryogenic engines with thrust of up to 15 kN! 🔥

Last Friday, we had the pleasure of visiting the facility and taking a look at their progress.

👉 Most of the fabrication is complete. The team members just need to order a few more parts and finalize the system. They’ll carry out their first static firing test before September 24!

Some interesting facts:

- 100% designed and built by students 👩‍🔧👨‍🔧

- 9 cameras to follow every moment of the test live 🎥

- Automated valve closure in the event of non-nominal pressure or temperature 🚨

- Remote-controlled configuration for greater safety and flexibility 📡

- Steel test stand, welded by Rocket Team, capable of withstanding 15 kN with a safety factor of 5 🛠️

- Equipped with bursting discs for optimum safety 💥
