🌌 Red Planet Day: A Celebration of Mars 🌌

On November 28th, we celebrate Red Planet Day, honoring our cosmic neighbor, Mars. Known for its distinct red hue due to iron oxide, Mars has captivated human curiosity for centuries.

This day marks the anniversary of NASA's Mariner 4 mission in 1964, which launched on November 28th and made history in 1965 as the first spacecraft to flyby Mars.

Since then, we've seen revolutionary missions like NASA's Mars Global Surveyor, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, and rovers like Spirit, Opportunity, Curiosity, and Perseverance delve deeper into Mars' secrets. But let's not forget the vital contributions from European missions!

The European Space Agency (ESA) has played a crucial role in Mars exploration with missions like Mars Express, which has been orbiting Mars since 2003, and the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter, launched in 2016 to search for traces of methane in the Martian atmosphere. These missions have provided invaluable data to expand our understanding of the Red Planet.

Looking ahead, Europe continues to be a key player in space exploration with future collaborative missions like the Mars Sample Return mission, set to bring Martian soil back to Earth. This groundbreaking project is a joint effort between NASA and ESA, furthering international cooperation and the pursuit of knowledge.

Red Planet Day reminds us of the incredible human ingenuity and persistence that continues to push the boundaries of space exploration. As we look at Mars shining brightly in the sky, we celebrate not just its mysteries, but the scientific achievements—by both NASA and ESA—that have been made to approach it and uncover its specific and incredible properties.

Yesterday was a busy day for the EPFL Space Center!

We were delighted to welcome some wonderful children as part of JOM (Journée Osez tous les Métiers).

They had the chance to meet and chat with @claude.nicollier, who told them about his amazing experience as an astronaut.

Afterwards, our aerospace engineer Marnix Verkammen explained how gravity works, and answered all our young visitors’ pertinent questions. (And he baked some delicious cookies! 🍪)

Finally, the children attended the « Space, Science & Technology » conference, featuring space personalities such as Michel Mayor - Nobel Prize winner, Daniel Neuenschwander - ESA, and Emmanuelle David- Executive Director of eSpace. Chloé Carrière - @galacticchloe - offered them a nice moment of discussion, and they were able to meet the student space teams after the conference.

On November 6, engineers @mathieu_udriot and Marnix Verkammen hosted the 4th Sustainable Space Hub coffee at @epflcampus.

September and October have been intense with several events and conferences that included the topic of space sustainability:

- The 3rd Workshop on “Life Cycle Assessment of Space Transportation Systems” in Stuttgart
- The Clean Space Days 2024 at ESTEC in the Netherlands
- The International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Milano

The EPFL Space Center staffs that attended one or more of these conferences took the opportunity to compile lessons learnt and a summary of international research to share with the EPFL community.
